Sheep to Chic
From Sheep to Chic !
From hand pulled wool from her own flock of Soay Sheep, Linda Moss creates beautiful 'Art Felt'.
The wool is processed, cleaned and either sent to a spinner to convert to yarn and then hand dyed by Linda with either acid dyes or vegetable dyes each imparting a unique nature to the wool yarn. The spun wool is then sold or used by Linda in her crochet work which is used around the hat bands. Alternatively the wool fleece is hand-rolled into felt from which she creates a variety of colourful and characterful products to be worn from hats and scarves to bags, and felt balls.
Linda works from her home in The Wash in the High Peak and runs a holiday cottage when she is not supervising PhD candidates in Cultural Policy, at Sheffield Hallam University, you may even find her on the train producing the rich products on her commute.

I make small individually designed items from mainly natural and local rawmaterials. My work includes hats, bags and jewellery, some combining silver and semi-precious stones. the felt is hand-rolled using wool from my own sheep and that of other local farmers, and alpaca. I use my own hand-made soap and the local soft water in the making. I introduce silk and other fibres to produce special textures, colours and effects: or I use undyed natural sheep and alpaca colours and fleece textures with stone, leather and horn fastenings. Sometimes beachcombed findings are incorporated, particularly sea-scoured glass and pottery fragments. I avoid plastics and man made fibres and fabrics. Many of the dyes are my own, produced from natural, local vegetation. I hold the Peak District Environmental Quality Mark for sustainable nature of the work, and its use of recycled, and local raw materials.
