The Fan-c Recycled Stove Top Fan

Having researched the Seebeck Effect and TEG modules (Thermoelectric power generation module), I purchased a selection of components and made a series of DIY woodburner stove top fan prototypes, the best of each version was developed subsequently into the Fan-C shown here.

It sits on top of my Morso Log Burner and being a heat powered fan, it starts up at about 85 degrees C ( flue pipe temp), it runs faster as the temperature climbs up to 200 degrees. If I move the fan position on the stove top I can adjust the fan speed. You can use a stove thermometer to determine the surface temperature of your stove top - anything between 85 & 200 degrees C is fine. However, some Stoves have a surface temperature far greater and these will damage the integral workings of the TEG module. At very low temps below 100 degrees, please use the contact form to discuss before ordering.

The principle is in generating a temperature variation between the upper and lower plates of the TEG module. The cooling fins of copper and the fan moving air over them ensure that the upper surface is cooled while the lower surface is heated by the stove. The transfer of heat through the TEG enable the module to do its technical bit and generate the electricity for the fan motor.

Good fun if you like that sort of thing - the competitions product was too tall for my 2nd Morso Badger and I now have a Fan-Ce placed on top moving warm air from around the stove into the room.

A point to note is that unlike the aluminium based competitions versions, which require placement at the rear of the stove to pull cool air from behind the back of the stove - my little unit has the far more efficient copper cooling fins - the increased surface area and improved heat conductivity of copper means the fan will run anywhere on the stove top and is ideal for situations where a Woodburner or Multifuel Stove has been installed into an old Coal Fireplace....you know like with a shoe horn !

The design has proven to be popular and as a result I have added the Fan-C & the larger version the Fan-Ce to my portfolio of products. Please use the PayPal button below if you would like to purchase a unit. Occassionally I will make a 'special' which may have a more 'designer look' to it with 'black / gray lacquered copper fins' and a different shape / colour of fan center hub - if you like to have something really different or have a stove without a flat top use the contact form to discuss futher.

The Fan-C measure 145 mm high 113mm wide and are ideal where your stove has been set into an old Coal Fire place with limited head room. It is 75 mm front to back and sits on a 75 mm diameter disc. it moves upto 200 cu/mtr/hr

The Fan-Ce measure 158 mm tall, 125mm wide and 100 mm front to back sitting on a 75mm diameter disc. This moves upto 240 cu/mtr/hr.

Please note, the Black Varient of the Fan-Ce and the smaller Fan-C are on a very limited availability, if you would like one of these units, then please first use the contact form to establish lead time and confirm prices.

1 off Black Fan-Ce in stock ready to post £225 each please use the contact form to order.

All Fans now ship as a High Temperature version (HT) designed and tested with the aid of Nottingham University Environmental Technology Centre. The tests confirmed that Hot Plate Temperatures upto 350 degrees C were acceptable and did not result in the fans TEG module failing. However, it should be understood that placing the Fan-C or Fan-Ce at gas mark 9 all evening may cause problems - we recommend a stove top Temp not higher than 250 degrees C and plenty of air around the stove to asist with the convection currents the fan is there to asist. Common sense prevails on most occassions :-) ! If in doubt please use the contact form below to discuss.

All prices plus P&P @ £11.50 UK. International Buyers Please note - postage costs will be confirmed and you will be contacted after order placement should these exceed the prices included within the PayPal standard prices. Alternatively please request postage costs in advance through the contact form.

It had been a busy few months with other projects developing at a pace. Meanwhile, whilst still needing to eat, commissions for woodturning / carving have provided time in the workshop away from research on the PC.

A 'Large Salad Bowl' Commission is nothing new, but to take the order via contact through this website from Brussels just goes to prove that on-line business for bespoke handcrafted products does work. The finished Hardwood Salad Bowl hand turned in my workshop measures some 14" x 6 " - and yes it is sat on a large jam jar in the phot - it was what cam eto hand :-)

The next project, from my local area of Chapel en le Frith, Capital Of the High Peak none the less, was an education in carving English Oak - I have confirmed that as it ages it gets a lot harder and carving by hand is very hard on the hands ..... or my hands have gone a bit soft over the last few months. I look forward to seeing this Roof Finial in place some 50 ft up above Bank Hall Lodge.

Thank you for looking through our news section.

Salad Bowl

This bowl came from a section lower on the tree and was 28" in diameter 14 feet up the tree ! It was a big tree and would have demolished the farm house had it fallen down.

Coated with a several coats of a food safe finish which dries clear and provides protection for use, the bowl is one of a number made from the section of timber. No two the same as I allow each bowl and timber to come together rather than engineer the bowls and make the timber fit ! The contrasting colours and compression figure in the sides of the bowl make these a great item to hold and turn over as you see new shapes and colours on the surface.

The bowls are turned while the timber is fresh and allowed to air dry and distort out of round to add a little extra something not found on the high street in production run wooden bowls.

14" across by 8 " deep

Guide price £75.

Smaller bowls at 12" diameter by 5" deep guide price £45.

A further batch is now being made, these will be the last from this harvested tree. Please use the contact form if you would like to 'reserve a blank / bowl' The largest will be 16" diameter x 6" deep, the smallest approx 11"x 4".

The second image shows the last of the batch of Poplar wood as a large salad bowl, it was made for a lady that contacted me via this page whilst she was working an dliving in Brussels - a pleasure to work with over the internet via email.

Hand Carved Oak Roof Finial

Requests come in many shapes, for this commission I was handed a shoe box of old wooden bits and a photo of what it had once been.

"Can you make one for us please and how much will it be ?"

The finished finial measures 30 " long and 8" across at its widest point.

What could I say, a chance to further develop the carving skills and use the slowly building box of sharp edges. I wish I had found and used some sweet chestnut - it being softer and easier to hand carve - it is in short supply in the High Peak where as I had some suitable Oak sections slowly drying in the store rescued from a firewood pile.

The upper portion was first rough turned on my VB36 lathe and then marked out for the hand carving. the lower section was turned on my Union Graduate Centre Lathe and then again marked out by eye and hand carved. The finished finial was then soaked in a suitable preserver and coated with plenty of Linseed Oil to give it some additional protection from the High Peak Weather.
